By India Today Web Desk: Jonny Bairstow has revealed that he was impressed by England’s performance in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup where they defeated India by ten wickets.
India had set England a target of 169 runs to win the match. However, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales made light work of the target as the English team won the match by 10 wickets to enter the final of the tournament against Pakistan on Sunday.
Bairstow was supposed to be part of the squad in Australia before he sustained a horrific injury during a freak accident. The England batter, while talking to Sky Sports, revealed his admiration for the team’s performance in Adelaide and said that they were fearless throughout the run chase.
Bairstow also hailed the character shown by England after their loss to Ireland earlier in the tournament to reach the final.
“It was amazing, what a performance, as clinical as you can be. You need people to stand up in a semi-final and that’s exactly what happened.”
“Absolutely. They were fearless all the way through the run chase.”
“The character the guys have shown to come back from losing to Ireland and now being in a World Cup final is amazing but they will be well aware the job is not done yet,” said Bairstow.
England and Pakistan faced each other in a seven-match T20I series recently, with the former emerging victorious at the end. Bairstow believes that the result will give England confidence heading into the final. The wicketkeeper-batter also said that it will be a level playing field on Sunday and there are no favourites for the match.
“There will be confidence after that seven-match series in Pakistan [in September and October] that we came out the right side of but we also know the qualities they have.
“It is a level playing field when it comes to a World Cup final, I don’t think there are favourites. If Pakistan’s players stand up, it is going to be an enthralling game but if we can take early wickets and get into the middle order, we should be alright,” said Bairstow.
