‘Insider versus outsider’ debate rages in Meghalaya

An ‘insider vs outsider’ debate is raging in Meghalaya which is gearing up for assembly polls. While the National People’s Party (NPP) has tagged the opposition Trinamool Congress as an “outsider party”, the TMC has stated that Delhi is “too far away” and that Kolkata is the gateway to the Northeast.

NPP leader and chief minister Conrad Sangma, while addressing election rallies in Resubelpara and Mendipathar recently, said, “Meghalaya cannot remain dependent on leaders and political parties from ‘outside’ for the development of the state. We cannot go to West Bengal and Delhi for solutions to our problems.” He said the NPP is the party formed by the late PA Sangma for the people of the state. The CM cautioned the Trinamool leadership that their MLAs might move to the BJP post-election and that talks were progressing on this.

Sangma said in North Garo hills recently, “We have great respect for Mamata Banerjee, but Trinamool is new in Meghalaya. They will need a lot of time to create any impact here. Their leaders are all old players who have come from the Congress. They had the scope to serve Meghalaya when they were in the Congress, but failed. They are an outsider in Meghalaya just like Trinamool had claimed that the BJP and other national parties were outsiders in Bengal.”

Trinamool’s COUNTER

Banerjee had clarified on several occasions that there have been rumours that Trinamool is a Bengali party although it is an all India one. She said Kolkata is nearer to Meghalaya and Delhi is far.
