‘I’m not a fine-dining person’: a Hongkonger’s top eats in the city

You haven’t had Hong Kong food if you haven’t had a good fishball noodle soup. either. Wong Lam Kee Chiu Chow Fish Ball Noodles (Shop A, 10 Shau Kei Wan Main Street East, Shau Kei Wan. Tel: 2886 0068) is the place to try it. It’s very springy, not artificial tasting.

I know how unhealthy and rich ramen soup can be but I am a sucker for it. I think Zagin Soba (7 Gough Street, Central. Tel: 2447 1398) does one of the best ramens in the world with their chicken soba. It’s no.

In Happy Valley, Pang’s Kitchen (25 Yik Yam Street, Happy Valley. Tel: 2838 5462) has a Michelin star but their prices are still very reasonable. The decoration is also very 1980s because I don’t think it’s been changed since then. But the food is amazing.

A more grand place I like is 10 Shanghai (Shop 101, Lee Garden Two, 28 Yun Ping Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2338 5500). I brought my mum here one year for her birthday. It looks expensive but is quite reasonable for good Shanghainese.

I can’t resist Australian Dairy Company (47-49 Parkes Street, Jordan. Tel: 2730 1356). It’s a very buzzy atmosphere but you do have to line up. The macaroni soup is a comfort, but I do also like an instant noodle dish occasionally.

In Central, I recommend Swiss Café (12-16 Li Yuen Street West, Central. Tel: 2111 0841) for a good cha chaan teng.

With my club, Carbon (26/F, The Steps – H Code, 45 Pottinger Street, Central. Tel: 6166 8585), we have eight partners. We all come from different businesses and decided to pool our talents together. Food wise, it’s a grill with big plates designed for sharing. My favourite is the roast chicken in a box.
