High school student arrested after battle with Marin teacher

A student was arrested after a fight with a teacher Thursday at Redwood High School in Larkspur.

The incident took place at 11:30 a.m. on the building’s second floor, according to a letter to parents from Barnaby Payne, the principal.

Video from the incident appears to show an adult leading a student down a hallway. The student walks backward and the adult’s left hand rests on or near the student’s right shoulder. Then the student begins to strike the adult in the head.

The adult reaches his left arm around both the student’s shoulders, pulling him closer, and the student reaches his own right arm around the adult’s neck. The student pushes the adult to his knees and clasps both arms around his neck before other people approach and separate the two.

“Another school adult was able to assist in breaking up the altercation and the student left the scene,” Payne wrote.

School staff were able to “peacefully engage the student,” and also contacted police, who took the student into custody, he said.

Payne said no weapons were involved in the incident. He asked parents to police their children’s social media use to “help prevent any misinformation that is not verified from the school or school district.”

Tara Taupier, superintendent of the Tamalpais Union High School District, said, “We are not aware of any threats being made prior to the incident and do not know at this time what precipitated the event.”

“This was a single incident between the student and staff member, no other parties were involved,” Taupier said.

She did not immediately respond to a followup query asking whether the school had been locked down, or students asked to shelter within classrooms, or if any other precautions went into effect on account of the incident.

The Central Marin Police Authority did not respond to requests for information.
