Govt describes criticism of its G20 Finance Minister chair statement as misplaced & politically biased

The Modi government on Tuesday without naming Congress MP Shashi Tharoor noted that any criticism of its G20 Finance Ministers’ Chair’s Summary and Outcome Document is misplaced and factually inaccurate and termed comments as politically biased.

“We have noted some politically biased and motivated comments on the G20 Finance Ministers’ Chair’s Summary and Outcome Document. The fact is that it is India’s considered and balanced position that contributed in forging the Bali Declaration. In particular, Prime Minister’s statement that this is not an era of war found great resonance,” sources said.

“Our endeavor was to reflect the Bali consensus in the G20 Finance Ministers’ Meeting. This was expressed in the Chair’s Summary and Outcome Document. Therefore, any criticism is misplaced and factually inaccurate.”

This comes on the eve of G20 Foreign Ministers Meet here amid India’s efforts to bridge the gap between West and Russia on the Ukraine issue.

In a recent interview Tharoor claimed that there’s a damaging contradiction in India’s position on Ukraine as a result of which the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Bengaluru last weekend was “an absolute setback for Indian diplomacy”.

“In effect, India undermined its own leadership of the G20 to placate the Russians … this is getting absurd. This is really something India ought to be embarrassed about … this is an example where India’s nerve failed,” Tharoor noted in the interview.

Meanwhile, China’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Qin Gang will attend the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Delhi on March 2. “The G20 should focus on prominent challenges in the global economy. China stands ready to work with all parties to ensure the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting sends a positive signal on multilateralism,” Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday.
