By India Today Web Desk: Chelsea and France midfielder N’Golo Kante has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup 2022 after undergoing an operation on a hamstring injury, the Premier League club announced.

Kante, who played a crucial role in France’s 2018 campaign, suffered the setback in the final stages of his recovery and will now remain on the sidelines for four months following the surgery.

The midfielder’s season was curtailed after sustaining hamstring issues. The FIFA World Cup 2022 will take place from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar. Kante played only two Premier League matches this season.

“The midfielder visited a specialist with the club’s medical department to explore the options for his rehabilitation approach and it was mutually agreed for N’Golo to have surgery to repair the damage,” Chelsea said in a statement.

The 31-year-old has been a crucial player for Chelsea since leaving Leicester City in 2016. Kante has been equally important for his national team, having made 53 appearances.

France coach Didier Deschamps had warned that he would not pick any player who would not be fit for the World Cup.

The defending champions now find themselves in a tricky situation ahead of picking their squad on November 9 as another midfielder and Juventus star Paul Pogba is in doubt after undergoing knee surgery last month.

France have been drawn alongside Australia, Denmark and Tunisia in Group D. Deschamps’ team will begin its World Cup campaign against Australia on November 22.
