By India Today Web Desk: Morocco coach Walid Regragui said that his team was aware of Spain’s game-plan of putting pressure on the opposition through ball possession. On Tuesday, December 6, Morocco beat Spain 3-0 on penalties in a thrilling Round of 16 match at Education Stadium.

It also happened to be the first time that Morocco went through to the last eight in the history of the FIFA World Cup. Abdelhamid Sabiri, Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi scored in the penalty shootout to take Morocco past the finish line.

Badr Benoun missed for Morocco, but it didn’t make much of a difference. Yassine Bounou also starred for Morocco as he saved three goals in the shootout from Sergio Busquets, Carlos Soler and Pablo Sarabia.

“We fought and made the Moroccan people happy, we made history and Morocco deserve it, Moroccan people made us united on the pitch,” Regragui was quoted as saying to Bein Sports.

“We honoured the Arab and African football, coach Regragui gave us the confidence that we needed in this game, a big boost in morale,” he stated.

“We knew that Spain depend on their ball possession and we played with that in mind. They didn’t impose any danger,” Regragui added.

Morocco are now scheduled to lock horns with either Switzerland or Portugal in the quarterfinal. Earlier, Morocco advanced to only their second World Cup quarters after the first way back in 1986. They are also the only African and Arab team which is alive in the multi-nation mega event in Qatar.
