By India Today Web Desk: Morocco fans threatened to breach security to attend their country’s FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 match against Spain on Tuesday, December 6 at Education City Stadium.
The situation worsened to the extent that police had to interfere and seal off the route. Morroco happens to be the only African and Arab side left in the ongoing mega event in Qatar.
Moroccan fans have been looking for tickets to see their team face the 2010 champions. Morocco have never advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
“Show your tickets please,” marshals at the stadium shouted as fans tried to go through inside the venue.
“We hope to get in,” said one man, who didn’t give his name. A few people tried to push their way through the edge of the cordon.
“Brothers, you are wasting your time. There is no entrance here,” a marshal was heard screaming as more and more fans kept gathering.
Morocco went through to the quarters for the first time since 1986 despite not being one of the favourites. Morocco finished on top of Group F with seven points from three matches.
Earlier, the Moroccan consulate in Spain urged the fans and supporters to “show sportsmanship regardless of the result.”
After drawing their match against Croatia, Morocco beat Belgium 2-0 before they defeated Canada 2-1. The victory against Belgium was massive, since the latter is currently ranked No.2 in the world.
