Fatburger was founded by Lovie Yancey, who opened a tiny burger stand called Mr. Fatburger with a partner on Los Angeles’ Western Avenue in 1947. She acquired sole ownership and shortened its name in 1952.
Yancey, who died in 2008, was a Black woman who succeeded in a fast food environment dominated by men who built burger empires in Southern California in the 1940s and ’50s, including Carl Karcher of Carl’s Jr., the McDonald brothers, who founded McDonalds, and Harry Snyder, who founded In-N-Out Burger.
Today there are about 200 Fatburger locations worldwide, according to the company.
Fatburger fans are said to include Ray Charles, Redd Foxx and David Letterman. It is mentioned in “It Was a Good Day,” by Ice Cube and Notorious B.I.G.
Retaurant owners or investors have included Queen Latifah, Kanye West and the late Nipsy Hussle.
