FACT CHECK: Did The New York Times Publish This Cover Following The Club Q Shooting?

An image shared on social media allegedly shows a New York Times cover photo that features a Pride flag with bullet holes.

The cover is a piece of artwork made by an Instagram user. The photo is not of a legitimate cover from the newspaper.

Colorado Springs Club Q shooter’s mother, Laura Voepel, has been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, NBC News 9 reported. The owner of the club, Nic Grzecka, has vowed to reopen the club following the shooting, according to NPR.

The Instagram post appears to show a cover from Time Magazine in response to the Colorado Springs Nightclub shooting. The image features a pride flag with bullet holes and claims to be printed on the Nov. 20 issue.

“This is the front page of the NYT today,” the caption reads. “The attacks against the LGBTQ+ community are disgusting and should be condemned across the board.”

The cover is digitally fabricated. The image is rather an art piece created by Instagram user @shoshibuya.  The artist tagged the location as Club Q Colorado Springs as part of a tribute in the wake of the shooting. “ENOUGH ALREADY,” the caption reads.

The authentic Nov. 20 New York Times front page does not mention the Club Q shooting. An archive of New York Times Magazine covers shows the actual cover from Nov. 20, featuring an image of a broken train track in what appears to be Ukraine.

This is not the first time misinformation about the Club Q shooter has been spread online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim Raleigh, North Carolina Police department released a photo of the shooter.
