FACT CHECK: Did Auschwitz Have A Swimming Pool?

A post shared on social media purports Auschwitz had a swimming pool.

Verdict: False

The caption is inaccurate. There is no evidence that this photo was taken at Auschwitz.

Fact Check:

The Polish Government has seized control of the Russian Embassy school in Warsaw, CNN reported. Russia has stated they will retaliate against what they have described as “illegal” action while the Polish government has maintained that they have acted within the law.

The Twitter post purports that a swimming pool was available to Jewish prisoners in the concentration camp Auschwitz. The post shares a black and white image of  a crowded pool surrounded by tall fences.

“One of the great mysteries in our history is the swimming pool in Auschwitz,” the caption reads.

The photo was taken at a labor camp in Novaky in Slovakia, according to Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Centre based in Israel. The camp was unique in that a Jewish organization, Slovak Jewish Center, asked their government to establish a labor camp for those that did not want to be deported during World War II.

The labor camp was run by the Jewish leaders and “cultural activities such as drama, religious studies, and sports were allowed,” according to a document from Shoah Resource Center.  This experience was not available to Jewish prisoners at Auschwitz.

There is no credible news report that indicates the prisoners in Nazi concentration camps had any such experience. (RELATED: Is Kenya Getting Rid Of The U.S. Dollar?)

This is not the first time an image or video has been shared online with a false or misleading caption. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim that a Kansas House Bill would authorize “genital inspections of children.”
