Duchess Sophie’s beautiful coronation dress seen in new images

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh opted for Suzannah London to design her Coronation gown, and it’s seen in all its glory in the official Coronation portraits that were released today.

Similarly to Kate, Princess of Wales’ Alexander McQueen gown, Sophie’s dress was floor length with a slight A-line skirt.

It featured long sleeves with an elasticated cuff that added volume to the wrists.

The shoulders of the dress and the back were where the most detail was; the dress was a bandeau and had intricate lace embroidery across the shoulders and back.

Midway on the back, there were two large swathes of fabric that formed pleats to create a stunning train that was separated by a concealed zip.

And the train itself featured the same flower embroidery – which is believed to have been hand-sewn.

Suzannah London took to social media and shared behind-the-scenes photographs of Sophie’s dress being designed and made.

They wrote: “The making of the beautiful Coronation dress of HRH Sophie Duchess of Edinburgh. A behind the scenes little montage of joyous casual snaps in mine and Jenny’s workrooms.

“The British meadow flowers embroidery was inspired by the incredible work of ceramic artist @racheldein and embroidered by @jennykingembroidery.

“I reflected on the regalia of the previous Coronation in 1953 for the floor-length gown inspiration.”

In another post, Suzannah London revealed how long it took to make the gown, they said: “A project like this is created in many small stages from the initial concept.

“This is one of the first initial layouts of the embroidery on the toile- almost a 3-D version of a sketch.

“I felt it was interesting to show. There were many layers added to the embroidery after this point and creative designing on the form to achieve the end result.”

To complete her outfit, she wore a new pair of Emmy London’s Charlotte ivory pointed wedding shoes.

These heels retail at £455 and are available to purchase online.

The Charlotte style is one of the brand’s “most timeless and exquisite styles”. They featured a 95mm heel and a “lovely pointed toe”.

The product description read: “The metallic gold leather cross-over straps form a ‘V’ shape that lengthens your legs, while the double buckle is adjustable for ultimate comfort and security.”
