‘Be prepared’: Miserable deluge set to hit

Australia’s east coast is expected to be an absolute wash out this weekend with a drenching in Sydney and up to 200mm of rain in some areas.

The three day deluge is set to kick off on Saturday and last into Monday leading to a miserable weekend.

As a low pressure system slowly moves across south eastern Australia, with associated troughs, that moisture could also push into parts of the ACT, Queensland and Victoria.

Other states, such as Western Australia will, in contrast, see bright sunshine – albeit with mild spring temperatures.

“Be prepared with the umbrellas and the potential for the heavy accumulation of rain on the weekend,” said Sky News Weather meteorologist Bradlyn Oakes.

Rain and storms will move into northern New South Wales on Friday and southern Queensland on Saturday. It will then intensify over the weekend.

Drenching

“At this stage, the heaviest rain is likely to occur in NSW between Saturday and Monday,” stated website Weatherzone.

“One area of particular risk for heavy rain and flooding will be the southern half of the NSW coast and adjacent ranges, where a focused stream of onshore winds could produce more than 100mm of rain and possibly more than 200mm in some places.”

Sydney should be mostly sunny on Friday with highs of 27C – but don’t be fooled, the moisture is approaching.

Saturday could see 8-30mm of rain in the city with a possibility of a thunderstorm with 15-60mm on a stormy Sunday.

Monday is also likely to be wet with up to 15mm falling. Temperatures across the weekend will be around 20C with 14C lows.

200mm in southern NSW

Newcastle could see up to around 50mm between Saturday and Monday while Wollongong could be harder hit with as much as 125mm across the three day period.

Inland, Dubbo and Bathurst are forecast to see up to 30mm on Saturday.

Coastal southern NSW could be particularly badly hit with Nowra potentially seeing 45mm on Saturday followed by a whopping 110mm on Sunday alone if the upper ends of the forecast eventuate.

The Bureau of Meteorology has not yet issued any specific weather or flood warnings for NSW but may do so as the inclement weather powers up.

Canberra may be just far enough inland to escape the worst with light showers on Friday and then up to 10mm on each weekend day. Maximums of 22C can be expected on Friday and mid-teens on Saturday and Sunday.

Rain for parts of Queensland, Victoria

Southern areas of Queensland bordering NSW may see some showers on Saturday. The Gold Coast could measure a bit under 10mm.

Brisbane is set to be cloudy with scattered showers across Friday and into the weekend but nothing particularly heavy. Highs will be around 25C with dawn lows of 16C.

Some showers in Melbourne for late Friday morning with up to 6mm falling. On Saturday just a light sprinkling and then sunshine on Sunday. A maximum of 21C on Friday falling to 17C on Sunday. Overnight lows of 6C across the weekend.

Mallacoota, in Victoria’s east, could see more sustained rain with showers on Saturday and Sunday, and up to 10mm on Monday. Across Victoria light rain can be expected on Friday.

Mostly precipitation free in Hobart, aside for a shower on Friday. A mild Saturday reaching 15C and then 19C on Sunday. Lows will struggle to get to 10C.

Showers will ease in Adelaide on Friday with around 5mm in the gauge but most of that during the morning. Sprinkles will be possible on the weekend with 17-19C highs.

Perth will see pleasant spring sunny weather over the coming days with the mercury climbing from 21C on Friday to 23C on Sunday. Chilly overnight, though, sinking below 10C.

Across the country’s north it will remain dry with mid-thirties highs for Darwin. Similar for Townsville but it will be slightly cooler with maximums of around 30C and 20C lows.
