Asda shopper told his ‘bargain’ breakfast would cost £617

An Asda shopper “was very close” to spending £617 on a pack of croissants after an error at the supermarket till.

The man, who asked not to be named, was staggered to see £617.91 appear on his self-checkout screen when he scanned the item he’d found in the “reduced” price section.

The packet of two Asda Extra Special almond croissants had a yellow sticker on, and were supposed to be 60p, instead of the original £1.70.

The customer said: “It was a good job I did a double take, I was very close to just tapping my card without checking.

“The member of staff and myself both saw the funny side of it though. Imagine if I hadn’t noticed, they’d have had to have been the best croissants of my life.”

The man had intended to buy the croissants for breakfast the next morning, reports Liverpool Echo.

The item was voided after the man called a nearby member of staff over at the supermarket in Warrington, Cheshire.

An Asda spokesperson said the incorrect price was a “complete anomaly”, caused by a smudged barcode. They added: “We know our croissants are good, but we agree £617 might be pushing it.

“This looks to have been a one-off caused by a smudged or damaged barcode that has scanned incorrectly and we’ve checked our other yellow sticker products at this store and have not found any other issues.

“Thankfully this was spotted and rectified by our colleague immediately, and we hope this customer enjoyed their croissants knowing he only paid 60p for them in the end.”
