ALAMEDA — In a statement Tuesday night, Alameda Unified School District staff said two incidents at Alameda High School involving unexpected breaches of security were under investigation.
No students or teachers were injured in the incidents, which each involved a male adult wandering onto campus and interacting with students.
In the first incident, a former student came to the campus, where students filmed him briefly before alerting office staff. Campus security responded, finding the former student at an auditorium speaking to a dance instructor.
After taking the former student to the school’s front office, where he was identified, the school principal spoke wth him while police and a firefighter care unit were summoned.
“The Care Unit staff confirmed they knew the young man and removed him from campus by about noon,” a school district statement said in part Tuesday night.
“Some minutes later, AHS staff requested that the Care Unit staff do a safety check on him, as he had alluded to students being afraid he would ‘shoot up the school’ some years ago.”
In a second incident, an unknown adult wandered onto the campus around 3 p.m. and entered a classroom. There, he approached a girl and touched her face.
“The man left the room, encountered two girls in the hall, and asked if he could kiss one of them. The teacher followed him out of the room,” the statement said.
“The man fled the building before staff could implement a shelter in place or lock down. The teacher continued following him all the way to the Fruitvale Bart Station, where he asked for assistance from BART Police. BART officers took a picture of the man, but he was lost at the station.”
School officials said staff knew to reach out to police to handle the incidents, and said they would review security procedures to insure campus security: “Again, we recognize this is unsettling news and want to assure you we are taking this incident and our follow up extremely seriously. There is no issue or responsibility more important than the safety and security of our students and staff.”
In two separate incidents today, AHS staff and @AlamedaPD responded to intruders on campus. No students or staff were physically harmed, and AUSD is grateful for the support of both APD and @alamedacityfire‘s Care Unit. Full details: https://t.co/YQDcDQETCq.
