Television journalist Barbara Walters died on December 30 at the age of 93.
“Barbara Walters passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones. She lived her life with no regrets. She was a trailblazer not only for female journalists but for all women,” Walters’ spokesperson Cindi Berger told CNN in a statement.
Walters’ career, which spanned over five decades, began on NBC, but she really made waves starting in 1976, when she joined ABC as the first female anchor on an evening news program. She then went on to host or co-host countless specials, The View and 20/20.
It was at the ABC’s 20/20, where she and Deborah Roberts, who is currently an ABC News Senior National Affairs Correspondent, worked closely side-by-side. Upon hearing the news about Walters’ death, Roberts shared a photo of the two on social media with the caption, “So sad to hear of the passing of Barbara Walters. What an honor to share the set @ABC with the inimitable trailblazer when I joined @abc2020. Will never forget the phone call when she asked me to join the groundbreaking program.”
Al Roker, Roberts’ husband, also shared a few photos of his wife with Barbara on Instagram, noting that the two had a special relationship. “I know @debrobertsabc treasured her relationship with #barbarawalters A mentor, a friend and a trailblazer.”
Other journalist such as Oprah Winfrey, Robin Roberts and Katie Couric also shared tributes to the trailblazer.
